About Us - Introduction

Baraka African Cultural Centre is a non-profit cultural centre dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children aged between 7 – 18 years through formal education and equipment of skills in cultural music, dance and drama. The word Baraka is a Kiswahili word that means ‘blessings’. Several of our children are orphaned or come from broken homes where the existing guardians or parents are unable to care for them, also others are just single parented or with parents but helpless. Our goal at BACC is to be a blessing to these vulnerable children such that they can be a blessing to themselves and others.

Environment

Contribution to the Environment

Baraka decided to put a lot of emphasis on Climate, Zero hunger , quality education, gender equality and partnerships for the goals , which made us not only performers but climate activists and at the same time mentors and teachers of the SDGs in our small communities. We do a lot of activities falling under those goals. It’s with this need that we are in need of more support of volunteers and interns to help us archive our goals and the SDGs at the same time.

Contribution to the Environment(UN Sustainability Development Goals)

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Our Mission and Goals

Our Mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable children through formal education and development of life skills through the 5R

RESCUE

In the initial stages of identifying children in need, we form a collaborative relationship with the people on the streets of Kampala and the surrounding slum areas. We hold social activities in the slums like dance performances, soccer matches, medical outreaches and children’s camps in order to build relationships with the children and learn about their backgrounds.

REHABILITATE

At the time of admission, some street and slum children are ignorant about life in the normal community. They often don’t understand basic hygiene habits or may have never sat in a classroom. In order for them to be accepted into society, they require rehabilitation.

RECONCILE

At Baraka, we investigate each child’s individual family history; where their family or extended family is and why this family was not caring for the child.

When we determine each child’s ability for reconciliation with their family, we put in place various methods for building renewed relationships with these people and their child. In cases where the family is abusive to a child, we look for the extended family and try to empower them to care for the child at risk.

REUNITE

There are over 2.3 million known orphans in Uganda. According to the 2009 statistics, die each year during or just after giving birth.” Many children are found abandoned in garbage heaps, pit latrines, ditches, taxi parks or left by the side of the road.

RESTORE

Once we have empowered a child’s family to provide a safe and loving environment, we permanently resettle the child back in his or her family. In some cases, we continue to provide for the child’s education, depending on the financial status of the family caring for the child. We continue visiting and supporting these families and children; ensuring that the children are well cared for.

At Baraka Performers

In addition to energetic traditional dances, and soothing & well amplified folk songs, we give educative commentaries purposely to enable our audience understand the root of the various cultures of Uganda. We work with fully registered schools to ensure that our children are legitimately educated at Government recognised schools. They’re so many talented children seated back home without attending school because of school fees, here at Baraka we believe that all children have a right to education. This one of the reasons why we partner with schools and empower building of schools in different regions of Uganda.

What We Do

Climate Change advocacy

We empower the use of banana fibers because plastics are the most enemies for our environment which is also affecting a lot our climate. This gives them an opportunity to plant trees in deforested areas and in their free land spaces, while earning a living. In order to have a more sustainable impact, we raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving the environment. The future of the planet is in the hands of the younger generations and the current generations. This is why we train young people to become environmental multipliers and work with environmental clubs in schools. We also use radio talk shows to reach more people. In addition to protecting the environment, we wish to improve people’s health and nutrition. To that end, we will be distributing 30,000 fruit trees to families in need every 6 months.
